There is no reliable way to track a parcel without a tracking number — the number is the key every courier system uses to find your shipment. The good news: you can usually recover the number in a few minutes.

In this guide:

Before trying workarounds, spend five minutes hunting for the number itself. It is the fastest route to an answer, and everything below is a backup plan, not a replacement.

5 ways to recover your tracking number

  1. Search your email. Look for shipping confirmations from the retailer or words like “tracking”, “shipment” or “dispatch” in your inbox and spam folder.
  2. Check your texts. Many couriers send the tracking link by SMS when the parcel is collected.
  3. Log in to the sender’s site. Marketplaces and online shops store tracking numbers in your order history.
  4. Ask the sender. If someone posted the parcel to you, they have the receipt with the number — a quick message usually solves it.
  5. Check the courier’s app. If you booked the shipment yourself, the booking lives in your account on the courier’s website or app.

Can you track a parcel by address or name?

Most couriers do not offer public tracking by delivery address, for privacy reasons. A few let logged-in account holders see incoming parcels linked to their address, and some business shippers can search by reference number. As a recipient, though, the tracking number remains the standard route.

What to do if the number is truly lost

Contact the sender first — they can reissue the number from their receipt or account. If the sender is unresponsive and the parcel was sent through a post office, the sending post office may be able to look up the transaction from the date and destination. As a last resort, watch for the courier’s delivery attempt or a “we missed you” card. Once you have the number, enter it in the search box on our couriers page to follow your parcel.

How to avoid losing tracking numbers in future

A little organisation saves a lot of stress. Save every shipping confirmation email in a dedicated folder, photograph paper receipts before you leave the post office, and use a parcel tracking app that stores your numbers in one list. If you shop online often, a free account with the major couriers lets you see incoming parcels automatically. These habits take seconds and mean you will never hunt for a number again.

Can I track a package with just the order number?

Sometimes. Some retailers link order numbers to tracking inside your account, but couriers themselves need the tracking number. Convert the order number to a tracking number via the seller first.

Will the courier tell me the tracking number over the phone?

Usually only to the sender, for security. Recipients are normally asked to get the number from whoever posted the parcel.

How long should I wait before worrying?

Give it 24 hours from dispatch before chasing — the first tracking scan often lags behind the physical collection.

What if the tracking number does not work?

Check for typos first, especially mixed-up zeros and the letter O. If it still fails after 48 hours, the label may not have been scanned yet or the number may be wrong — contact the sender.
